Marketing tips and ideas to help you grow your business, by Jim Connolly

Get your marketing emails opened!

This post is all about email marketing; specifically, how to get your email marketing opened!

The reason I am focusing on getting your marketing emails opened, is that no matter how great your marketing message or offer is, unless people actually open it and read it, it’s not going to generate the results you want.

How to get your emails opened

So, how do you quickly determine the best way to get your marketing emails opened?  Simple: You keep copies of the marketing emails, which you have opened and you ask your contacts to do the same.

Then, you look at them and see what lessons you can apply to your own marketing!

Is this the best way to ensure your email’s get read? No!  The best way is to hire a proven expert.  Is this an effective way for a keen, small business owner to improve his or her email marketing results? Yep!

Email marketing clues

Once you have looked at the marketing emails that either you or your buddies have opened, you need to start looking for clues.  By the way, it would be particularly useful, if you could get existing customers to let you know the kind of marketing emails THEY have opened, as they are the same profile of people that you want to target.

Here are just a few of the clues, which you may find when you examine those successful emails:

  • The email was sent to you, from someone you know and trust.
  • The email came from a person or company, which you remember subscribing to.
  • The subject line contained the correct spelling of your name.
  • The subject line contained the name of a person or business that you know personally or professionally.
  • The subject line contained a question that got you curious.
  • The subject line contained a bold statement, which grabbed your attention.

Many great marketing opportunities are missed by small businesses, simply because their emails never get opened or read.  The sender often thinks the message or the offer was unattractive, when the reality is that too few people actually saw it.  Don’t let this happen to you!  Email marketing is one of the most effective and cost effective marketing tools on the planet – So long as you use it correctly.

I am fundamentally opposed to ever using any type of email marketing campaign because that stuff drives me batty. When you see you got mail you get excited that it might be a friend and it is always a downer when it is from a business. Too risky in my eyes cause you could catch a person on the wrong day and they could go off in a public way online. Not to mention that email has perhaps been the most abused of all mediums to interact with clients.

The problem is not marketing it is how it is integrated. Obviously the spam does work or people would stop using it. I think “guilt marketing” is very effective. @garyvee is probably one of the best. With that being said, I am annoyed by bloggers who “ask” for money. It is not the job of the reader to be monetize it is the job of the blogger to monetize much like it is the marketers job.

@igebadia, IMHO, you can’t worry about the outliers like how someone is going to react because of the mood they are in.

We have a couple of iPhone free iPhone applications. The apps do not have any ads and they do what they do very well.
We ask to the users to register their email address in order to use the application, but we have realized that the quantity of downloads of the apps is far bigger than the quantity of register users. It looks like the apps, as they are right now, do not like trustable enough. We need to work harder in the message in order to get more email addresses to even start an email campaign for the paid apps.
Any blog post to recommend about how to get users to let their email addresses?
    Thanks,
    Guillermo

    • Sometimes I feel like Tommy Terrets having to deal with the crap service online. People don’t get they often pay for the sins of others. Email is so risky when you consider it just takes an email to posterous, a video response to your youtube channel, a rant of your facebook fanpage.

You can call it a newsletter, you can pretend it is useful but 999/1000 times it always ends up in the spam folder.

See success in business online really is about trust and empowerment. Just by getting your daughters drama club to create a satire of whatever you do can do marketing. A how do they do that where through social networks you empower your users to succeed in using whatever you sell. YOU DO NOT TRICK THEM..

the funny thing is it is so simple. Your marketing is done by your fans who you do everything you can to help them succeed and encourage them to fbshare, retweet, tell there friends.. simple coupons could do wonders..

but no you want our email addresses so you can annoy us to death with shit we do not care about.. email is too personal.. stay the fuck out of it. you want the fb share because it is the most valued feed for users.

You do not want my email address.. It brings out the crazy when I get spammed.. I don’t click unsubscribe.. I will yell on youtube.. and if I really wanted to mess with your mind I would pay some guy in india to get me 400k views for $200 which is essentially how a lot of video marketing is done. They are so good you can even get it to appear like US traffic.

Put a face back on your company.. get some morals.. cause if you don’t I am going to make you famous.. they don’t call me Tommy Terrets for my charm.. basically to the guy who scrapes my email.. it is high noon and we are standing facing each other.. then I break out into united broke my guitar.

see the thing is about guilt, fear and penis marketing is in web 2.0 the people will always side with the person you screw over and she will tell 10 of her friends.. and a 100% of her facebook friends, she could be a mom that blogs..

why not simply treat people right. good service is the thing that is very easy to do better and can set you apart from others.

If you don’t we can see who is a worse singer.. lol.. forgive me.. I always bring a little imagination into the equation..
