I woke up this morning to the news that Steve Jobs has died.
As I have frequently referenced the genius of Steve Jobs on this blog over the years, today, I would simply like to share one of my favourite Steve Jobs quotes with you. It’s a message that regular readers will have seen me advocate many times, but never as eloquently or powerfully as Steve Jobs does here:
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.”

Amen to that.
My favourite quote like that is even simpler. Joseph Campbell: Follow Your Bliss.
Hi Paul. Personally, I prefer the urgency of Steve Jobs’ words.
Have to agree with you on that one Jim.
Steve Jobs was really an inspiration to all of us and I cannot believe that after such a recent step down he is gone. Maybe it is possible that because he stepped down he no longer had that passion that was there that kept him feeling alive. His passion probably kept him alive much longer than he would have otherwise if he did not survive his cancer.
Hi Greg. Having lived with someone through the late stages of cancer, I believe he stepped down because he no longer had the strength physically, to carry on.
What a beautiful quote. Thanks for sharing Jim.
Today is a sad day but a great opportunity to remember greatness.
Not living on other people’s thinking and other people’s opinion is very important. I learned this the hard way.
I have somehow never used an Apple product – Toshiba & HTC have been my loyal companions for more than two years now! But still I can feel the impact it has created in the minds of so many millions of people. Steve Jobs was solely responsible for it.
I loved this quote from the commencement speech: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Thanks for sharing this.
He was a true innovator and created something that others can use and remember long after he’s gone. I pray we can all be bold enough to do the same.
Thank you for posting this simple but very powerful message by Steve Jobs. Anyone who follows his advice can’t help but live a happy and fulfilling life.
Thanks for sharing this, Jim. Steve certainly lived that mantra. I just listened to his Stanford commencement address for the umpteenth time. He marched to his own drummer and the world is richer for it.
Steve was a good man and will be missed by many. God bless.
Steve was an inspiring leader who has certainly impacted my apporach to work and life.
I like the one where he quotes Henry Ford and his reaction to market research: “If I’d have asked them what they wanted they would have said faster horses”
[...] of the many insightful things Steve Jobs said is this: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. [...]
He will be badly missed. His genius of innovation is simply a gift to the world. I’m a Mac fan, wonder what will be the next phase for Apple.
