As usual, Jim, you make me think. Fortunately there are experts like yourself to turn to. Many business owners never were taught to market or to market correctly. It becomes a jumbled strategy with little focus.

In all things, it takes a Master to teach. We do better when we learn from a master instead of trying to grab a mishmash of information and try to make it work for us.

I think this is a huge deal when you are first starting out. I was shocked to see how many people resent you for wanting a different life and having the courage to go for it. Sometimes I think you have to be a little insane to try to start your own business cause it will teach you who your friends really are..

That said over the top optimism can also be a bad thing because sometimes you need a reality check. Still having someone believe in you is such a nice thing..

Hi Jim

This sounds like a classic Jim Rohn seasons tip, and I agree that we need to be careful what and who we listen to for risk that we are influenced by the wrong things. Stephen Covey talks about stimulus response and how our lives are dictated by choices. I have long since moved on from the simple concept of positive affirmations because without discipline and making the right choices we are deluding ourselves (another wise peice of advice from Jim Rohn). Alwyas keen to read your posts.

Yours.
Julian

Both voices are valuable, but I prefer the voice of an optimistic-realist (a.k.a. pragmatist).

The good ones live life pretty much the way you outlined, "Optimism isn’t about going through life or business without a plan, blindly expecting the best; it’s about believing that whatever happens, there’s a way to turn it around, to make things better."

p.s. Thanks for being an optimistic voice!

There's a benefit to being aware of the negatives so that appropriate contingency plans can be made. Pessimistic people can be useful (in "short and sweet" doses) for gaining insight into flaws that might otherwise be missed.

As well as external voices, there are those internal voices in your head that doom or motivate - it's definitely useful to do something about the "doomy" ones to neutralise their corrosive influence.

You're so right, Jim. This post is incredibly important now, as so many people are still crying poverty over the state of the economy. Yes, it's a tough time out there, but opportunities can still be found - typically by the optimists who are attracting positive energy.

Thanks for the great reminder.

To me, real excellence in customer service is doing something above and beyond what is expected. It doesn't have to be anything huge, the smallest of gestures generates so much goodwill. As an example, last year a client of ours fell and broke her leg. The team sent a get well soon card. She called the office to thank us and has since recommended us to 3 new clients. All because of a £1.99 card!(although we'd like to think it was because of the excellent tax advice we gave her!)

Jim,

It does seem to be a realistic goal to set for any person or organisation to always provide a high, consistently good service regardless of who is buying or how much they are buying.

My brother recently arrived at Heathrow from America to encounter some transport related problems and needless to say was quite shocked by the attitudes displayed by two different people in the space of 5 minutes - I've even expanded upon it on my latest blog post - linked to this comment. But a similar thought process to what you have mentioned in your post.
