I remember listening to a talk in London a few years ago, when one of the speakers made a great point, about the value of originality.
She said that when Seth Godin used the phrase Purple Cow to describe something unique, he was being unique. However, when the second person used the term to describe how they were unique, they were doing the exact opposite. They were copying Seth. They became the very thing they wanted to avoid.
Enough of you?
Whilst there’s nothing wrong with occasionally borrowing the buzz words or phrases of people you respect (if you must), you need to ensure there’s enough of YOU left, for us to see you as the beautifully unique person you truly are.
Some small business owners give us nothing of their own, when we follow them or read their messages. This makes it impossible for us to get a handle on what they are all about.
We can see they love to retweet the same people and click the ‘like’ button on certain Facebook updates, but what about THEM?
- What do they think?
- What are they passionate about?
- What do they believe?
- What’s their story?
- Why should we want to hire them?
In short: If we want people to connect with us, we need to give them something to connect with.
